Taking advantage of naturally-occurring luminescence is a great way of shining a bit of light in your baby’s room at night, and even more so if the biological lamp comes in the shape of a dinosaur.
All small kids love dinosaurs, maybe because no matter how fierce these gigantic reptiles seemed to be, they’re long gone off the face of the Earth, and can no longer harm anyone. On the other hand, making sure that your baby grows up with a pet along his side is almost a must, but at an early age, it’s probably better to stick to toy pets. Developed by BioPop, the Dino Pet biological lamp is the best of both worlds, as it resembles a dinosaur and can be used as a pet.
On top of that, Dino Pet makes a great night lamp, just in case your baby is afraid of the dark. The Dino part of the name doesn’t refer only to the lamp’s shape. Inside it there are dinoflagellates, a group of bioluminescent protists. Supposing that the plankton is well fed, and that the parents take care of it regularly, all it needs to light up is a gentle shake.
Using photosynthesis during the day, the plankton charges so that it can illuminate the room at night. Just keep in mind that the Dino Pet needs to be placed in indirect light in order to recharge properly. Besides light and water, the dinoflagellates also require nutrients, which come in the liquid form. Getting these inside is quite easy, as all you need to do is lift the cap covering its belly.
The lamp will also serve an educational purpose, as the baby grows older. First of all, he will notice that the better care he takes of the plankton, the brighter it will glow at night. Secondly, the Dino Pet could as well serve as his first science lesson. Not at last, the bioluminescent lamp makes a great conversation piece for parents.
Dino Pet is currently available on the manufacturer’s website for $59.95. This next-gen Tamagotchi will prepare the baby for taking care of a real pet, when the time comes. An apatosaurus-shaped micro aquarium today, a cat or a dog tomorrow!
